6 Hacks for Traveling with Wigs

Relying on alternative hair can make maintaining your hairstyle on the go seem daunting. However, with a bit of preparation and the right techniques, traveling with wigs can be a breeze! As summer approaches, we’re sharing our top must-know hacks for traveling with wigs, so you can enjoy your vacation feeling confident and present in your own skin.

Hack 1: Prepare for the Unexpected
Ever heard of Murphy’s Law? Anything that can go wrong will go wrong. Bring an older wig as a backup just in case your main one gets lost or damaged. Having a spare will give you peace of mind. If it’s an older wig you don’t wear often, you won’t feel bad if it stays in your suitcase! Plus, if you’re heading to a place with harsh weather or near saltwater, you won’t risk damaging the lace or hair fibers of your favorite everyday wig. You can even experiment with wearing your older wig under stylish hats and caps!

Hack 2: Don’t Underestimate a Plastic Bag
Our best recommendation is to pack your wigs in their retail boxes for maximum protection. However, if you’ve already discarded the box, don’t waste money on an expensive travel case! Jon Renau education expert, Emily Buckwalter, suggests, “A plastic bag is a perfect solution for storing your wigs in your luggage. Just make sure the lace lies flat to avoid bending and damaging the delicate material.”

Depending on your travel destination, it might be routine for airport or border staff to inspect your bag. If your wigs are safely stowed in their respective bags, they won’t get damaged during a hurried suitcase rummage.

Hack 3: Labels Are Your Friend
When traveling with multiple wigs, label each wig case or bag with its style and color to easily identify them.

Hack 4: Good Things Come in Small Packages
Pack travel-sized versions of your favorite wig care products. While hotel shampoos are a mystery, we know your wig fibers won’t respond well to them! Additionally, always carry a wide-tooth comb. They’re small enough to keep in your purse and are lifesavers for quick detangling throughout the day, especially during active-packed days or long hours on the road. This brings us to the next hack...

Hack 5: Keep It Short
When traveling through airports or on road trips, we recommend wearing a short or mid-length wig. This helps avoid friction against the seat if you’re sitting (or napping) on a flight or in a car for hours. It also prevents your carry-on straps from tangling in the wig when taking the bag on and off during airport security checks and boarding processes.

Hack 6: Natural Steam Works Wonders
Nobody likes seeing their precious, delicate wig style bent and misshapen after being stored in luggage. This is what we call “cold crimping” or “box hair.” Emily shares her favorite quick fix, “If I am wearing synthetic and it gets a little cold crimped, I put it in the bathroom on a wig stand while I shower. The steam helps smooth out and reshape the style.”

We hope these tips and expert hacks help you feel more prepared for your next adventure! Traveling with wigs doesn’t have to be stressful. By incorporating these easy hacks into your travel routine, you can embrace getting lost wherever your wanderlust leads you.
